Need Help Identifying Leak!

5 posts in this topic

So I was under my car yesterday and saw that there was some oil residue on my oil pan. At first I thought it might have been coming from the drain plug. being warped or not tightened securely or what not. I soon realized that higher up in the engine bay (from viewing upwards) that the bottom of my alternator was covered in the same fluid. So the fluid must have been dripping from that. I got out from under the car and looked from the top and saw that the top of the alternator was completely dry. So whatever is leaking must probably be some gasket or a hose or something. Anyone know what might be nearby that area that could be leaking? It is a orangish brown color. If anyone knows anything that would be much appreciated! Or does anyone happen to have a diagram of everything in the engine bay so I could visually diagnose? Thanks Guys!

If it is indeed oil, then from my experience i've only seen it leak from the oil pan gasket, filter/plug, and also the valve cover. The valve cover is more likely than the others though in this case.

Yes that is what I was figuring. The oil pan does have oil on it, but as does the alternator, which is much higher than the oil pan, so that's out. And the filter is on the further front side of the bottom of the car. So I thought it could be the gasket, however I'm not sure how, since the gasket sits higher than the alternator, yet the top of the alternator is oil-free. Just really confused and don't want to spend $70 on a mechanic diagnosis alone. :/

A bad OPG wouldn't get on to your alternator, like what you said before. Is there oil on your belt? If there is it could be spraying onto the alternator and that could give away that the leak is below the engine, so most likely OPG. But if there isn't then check your valve cover. Actually check it anyway lol. It could save you a lot of time.

Sorry for the late response, been busy the last few days, but the valve cover sits higher than the alternator, so i dont see how the bottom of the alternator would have oil on it, but not the top. And sorry for my last post. I said gasket and I was referring to the valve cover gasket. Not sure if you thought I was talking about the OPG
